Advanced Communication in Portuguese: Media and Entertainment

This course expands Portuguese language skills through oral and written discussion and critical analysis of a variety of “texts”—literary, mass media, and popular culture. The course explores selected works by making connections between both personal and collective experiences. The works examine, reflect, question, and influence Brazilian national identity. As a former colony of Portugal, and as a co-colonizer of lusophone African countries, Brazilian nation identity is inextricably tied to both Portugal and Portuguese Africa—Angola in particular. Thus, Brazilian cultural production will be viewed within the context of the influences that these other nations have had, lending a tri-continental, multi-national aspect to our examination of Brazil.

Prerequisite: PORT 204 or 402 OR permission from instructor.
