Globalization and the French-Speaking World
This course gives students the opportunity to gain insights into the different facets of the modern French-speaking world. Throughout the semester, we will travel from France to other European areas then to North and South Africa and finally the Caribbean and North America, choosing significant or more representative areas. We will look at their geography, their historical and political development, varied cultural aspects, and, at times, establish the importance of their links with the United States. In English.
FREN 150 will include a reading component with the following texts: Jean-Paul Sartre’s No Exit, Assia Djebar’s Women of Algiers in their Apartment, Sembène Ousmane’s God’s Bits of Wood, Patrick Chamoiseau’s Creole Folktales, and Gabrielle Roy’s Street of Riches.
