In this course, we use the city as an organizing principle for studying Italy’s varied cultural landscapes. The exploration of each of nine cities provides an interesting context for interdisciplinary explorations of society, culture and history; in the words of Sergio Pace, cities are “…a reflecting surface for historical events and political transformations, economic revolutions and social privileges, morphological models and architectural fashions. The city has become the place where most cultural processes, however controversial or contradictory, find their confirmation.1”

Prerequisite: ITAL 204 or 402 OR permission from instructor [open to non-Italian speakers as well] Fulfills Historical Analysis (HS) and North Atlantic World (NA) Gen Ed requirements
