Spanish Pragmatics

This course is an introduction to the study of meaning and language use, with a focus on Spanish.  Here we will discuss why and how we make certain statements in Spanish, in certain ways, at certain times, for certain purposes, to certain people.  This course involves discussion of the classical texts and theories in the field (particularly Grice) as well as analysis of a variety of data from corpora, fieldwork, and experimental materials.  Among the main topics of interest in this course are speech acts, implicatures, deixis, discourse analysis, and sociopragmatics.
