TuTh 9:30–10:45am, Dey 302, , Prof. Erika Serrato (serrato@email.unc.edu)

This course examines the literary, social, and political issues brought to the fore in 20th and 21st century Francophone Caribbean literature (e.g. Haiti, Guadeloupe, and Martinique). The texts discussed bear witness to the historical repercussions of French colonialism, independence, and departmentalization, as well as to the development of Francophone cultures around the globe. The course pays particular attention to the ways in which this body of literature addresses issues related to language, identity, race, and gender. Course taught in English.
