Studies in Spanish Drama: The Theater of Federico García Lorca

This class explores the theater of the most significant author of 20^th-century Spain, Federico García Lorca (1898-1936). Combining well-known tragedies like Bodas de sangre with understudied works such as his juvenilia and puppet plays, we will explore the development of Lorca’s theatrical output with a specific focus on the interplay between innovation and tradition. Students will develop specialized vocabulary in Spanish with which to analyze theatrical texts and their representations. Student work will include literary analysis, performance reviews, and their own creative adaptations of Lorca’s plays.

Prerequisite: SPAN 371 or SPAN 373
