November 1, 2022 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

The Romance Studies department is delighted to invite you to the lecture that Prof. Frederick de Armas, University of Chicago, will deliver on Tuesday, 1st November at 3:30pm, at the Pleasants Family Assembly Room in the Wilson Library. Join us for a buffet-style dinner in Toy Lounge (Dey Hall) after the presentation.

Born in Cuba and raised in Switzerland, Frederick de Armas received the PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (1969). He was awarded a doctorate Honoris Causa by the Université de Neuchatel (Switzerland) in 2018. He is Robert O. Anderson Distinguished Service Professor in Romance Languages and Comparative Literature at the University of Chicago. And he is the author of over 200 essays.
The title of the lecture is “Storm-Lands: A Theater of Anxious Wonderment in Imperial Spain.”
This event will offer an educational dialogue through a campus-based and cross-disciplinary lecture about Spanish Golden Age plays set in America and Asia. In considering the range of focal points that critics have emphasized in the study of theater, Prof. Frederick de Armas’ lecture also proposes ways of incorporating topics of cultural identities that were foreign to early modern Europe into a more comprehensive understanding of Spanish culture and literature.
