Martha’s research interests go from Linguistics to Literature. Coming from a background in Linguistics and Foreign Language Acquisition, her Master’s thesis focused on the acquisition of prosodic elements in French as a foreign language. Fascinated by autobiographical narratives by women, she has studied the work of authors like Amélie Nothomb, Nelly Arcan and Martine Delvaux. Martha’s current research centers on graphic memoirs by francophone women. Her dissertation, “Drawing Community: Embodying the Collective in Francophone Graphic Memoirs”, explores the ways in which female graphic artists use their pictorial embodiment in autobiographical texts to build a sense of community that embraces difference, instead of rejecting it.

While at UNC, Martha served as Co-President of the Graduate Romance Association (2018-2019). She also co-organized the Carolina Conference for Romance Studies (2017), the Francophone Speaker Series (2017-2019) and the Tournées Film Festival (2015).
