Bio

Cécile Ruel’s research focuses on 20th and 21st French century literature, with a special interest in travel narratives, particularly travel narratives by women. Her dissertation, entitled “Politique, poétique, philosophique: le récit de voyage de Simone de Beauvoir aux États-Unis”, shows how travel writing is central to Beauvoir’s thought as a creative space in which she engages with identity and Otherness, philosophy (particularly phenomenology) and politics.

Other interests include film, philosophy and environmental studies.
