Bio

Jhonn Guerra Banda is from Lima, Perú. Jhonn is a doctoral candidate specializing in the 20th- and 21st-century Latin American narrative. His current interests include gender and sexuality studies, violence, and politics. For his master’s thesis, he studied the transgressed version of male sexuality in El goce de la piel (2005) by the Peruvian writer Oswaldo Reynoso. He concentrated on the poetics of the writer established through the male body and the desire represented in a character that is updated in the five stories as parts of the same book. While at UNC, Jhonn has organized and co-organized a variety of events, including the marathon reading for the 30th Aniversary of Cien años de Soledad by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (2017),  the conference “Transient bodies and Gender Politics in 21st-Century Mexico” (2019) and currently he is part of the organizing committee of the Carolina Conference for Romance Studies. For the last past four years, Jhonn has been a judge for annual Learning through Languages High School Research Symposium organized by UNC at Chapel Hill and Duke University.
