UNC Chapel Hill currently participates in the Language Exchange, an inter-university, collaborative program that enables students from other participating state schools to pursue transfer credit in language courses not offered at their own institution. The UNC-CH courses on the Exchange are taught in person at the Chapel Hill campus (exceptions for global pandemic) and synchronously via web conferencing. Students taking a course on the Language Exchange continue to pay tuition to their home university.

UNC-CH currently offers via the Language Exchange elementary-level Cherokee and Hebrew, intermediate Portuguese and Italian, accelerated Romanian, advanced Russian, and graduate-level French. Universities on the Exchange collaborate through language consortiums to meet demands and avoid replicating offerings.
