ROML 501: Introduction to Digital Humanities for Romance Languages, Cultures and Heritage Studies

Course Description: This course will introduce students to the field of Digital Humanities and its application to the study of Romance Languages culture and heritage. Through the use of Project Based Learning and Design Thinking, students will have the opportunity to explore and analyze various cultural and historical texts and artifacts, and to use digital tools and methods to create new interpretations and projects. The course will cover a range of topics, including the history and development of Digital Humanities, the use of digital technologies in the study of literature, language, and culture, and the ethical considerations surrounding the use of digital tools in research and scholarship.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the history and key concepts of Digital Humanities
  • Develop skills in using digital tools and methods to analyze and interpret cultural and historical texts and artifacts.
  • Contribute to ongoing research projects using Digital Humanities approaches and techniques.
  • Understand the ethical considerations surrounding the use of digital technologies in research and scholarship.
  • Develop skills in project management, collaboration, and communication through the use of Project Based Learning and Design Thinking.

Assessment: Students will be assessed through a combination of in-class activities, group projects, and individual assignments. These may include short writing assignments, presentations, and the creation of a final project using Digital Humanities techniques.

Texts and Materials:

  • Introduction to Design Thinking & Maker Culture.
  • Various readings and materials provided by the instructor, including digital texts and artifacts related to Romance Languages culture and heritage.
  • Digital tools and resources as needed (e.g. text analysis software, image editing software).
