In this course we will examine the sound system of Spanish with respect to phonology, the underlying structure of the sounds of the language and the interactions between those sounds in the process of communicating meaning. We will look at the prominent theories of phonology from the Generative perspective.
Specific topics of the course will include phonetic analysis, the syllable, phonemes and their features, the framework of autosegmental phonology, and Optimality Theory. We will focus primarily on Spanish, though various examples from other languages will appear in order to demonstrate some concepts.
