Dorothy Ford Wiley Compact Seminar: Pre-Modern Diplomacy and the Arts

February 19, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 4:30 pm

The “rise” of diplomacy as a framework for global political relations in the 14th-18th centuries provided a fertile
context for creation and innovation in the arts. This seminar brings together scholars of history, literature, art,
music, and theater to explore how the performing, visual, and literary arts played an important role in celebrating,
commemorating, facilitating, and commenting on diplomatic encounters, furnishing objects for exchange, spaces for
sociability and self-fashioning, and emotional content for international negotiations.

Featuring:

  • Rebekah Ahrendt (Music, Yale)
  • Ashley Bruckbauer (Art, UNC)
  • Melinda Gough (English, McMaster)
  • Carmen Hsu (Spanish, UNC)
  • Meredith Martin (Art, NYU)
  • Jane O. Newman (German/Comp. Lit, UC-Irvine)
  • Nancy Um (Art, SUNY-Binghamton)
  • John Watkins (English/History, U. Minnesota)
