ROMS Colloquium – Marisa Escolar

March 2, 2016 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

In preparation for invasion, the Allies confronted the myth of “destination” Italy: a land of leisure produced through centuries of Anglo-American travel and travel writing, “destination Italy” was an unlikely war-zone inhabited by an un-warlike, feminine enemy.  This paper looks at how the 1943 guide to occupation of Enemy Territory – Italy set the parameters for invasion while looking forward to the restoration of “destination Italy” and then reads postwar guidebooks to identify continuities and strategic revisions.

This series is funded by a grant from the Institute for Arts & Humanities through the “Schawb’s Say Yes” program.
