ROMS Fall Film Festival

November 12, 2023 @ 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm

We are excited to announce that the line-up for the Fall Edition of the Romance Studies Film Festival is now complete. This year, the film club has prepared a Fall Film Festival dedicated to highlighting Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, and Accessibility in the countries where Romance languages are spoken.

A large portion of the history of Western cinema features stories in voices, bodies, and fictions that did not represent the diversity of the many places where Romance languages are spoken. Nonetheless, historically marginalized communities have always been at the center of the creation of moving pictures, even when their presence was denied and repressed. Thanks to the work of many communities and individuals, that is not the reality today. Cinema in Spanish, French, Portuguese, Romanian and Italian speaks about lives in the diverse communities of countries around the globe, sharing stories about love, hatred, resistance, friendship, solidarity, beauty, and life. But more than this, many films today do not neatly conform to a narrow idea of “films about minorities.” Under the banner “the other no more,” the 2023 edition of the ROMS Film Festival proposes an intersectional approach to films in Romance languages, where the “other” does not have to be the theme (or, if you prefer, the “token”), but rather is one aspect of the feature, freed from the sole function of representation to otherwise tell stories, inspire audiences, provoke thoughts, and make lasting, moving, and engaging films.

We hope you can join us on November 10, 11, and 12 in Toy Lounge to watch these films and also to participate in the informal post-screening discussions, as well as the closing roundtable.
