Maury Bruhn is from Denver, Colorado. She completed her B.A. in English Literature and French at Seattle University, and worked as an English Language Assistant in Angers, France before beginning her Masters at UNC in 2011. After finishing her Masters in 2013 she worked for two years as an English Lecturer at the Université de Montpellier and returned to UNC to begin her doctorate in 2015. She is currently a teaching fellow and doctoral candidate under the direction of Dr. Jessica Tanner.

Her dissertation project, tentatively titled “Resonant Images: Energy, Matter, and Proust’s Visuality” focuses on multisensory image-making in in A la recherche du temps perdu. Her research interests include French aesthetics from Diderot to Proust, ekphrasis, intermediality, and aesthetics and cognitive science. She has presented work on Proust and theater at the American Comparative Literature Association’s Annual Meeting and work on Diderot on theater at the Carolina Conference for Romance Studies and on landscape at the International Conference on Narrative. In summer 2018 she was awarded the Diane Roth Leonard Summer Research Fellowship by the UNC Graduate School, allowing her to spend the summer writing her dissertation prospectus and doing research in France.

Additionally, she has held positions in the Graduate Romance Association, and has worked as an organizer for the 2018 Carolina Conference for Romance Studies “Visions and Revisions: Romance Utopias and Dystopias” and for the 2016 and 2017 Tournées French Film Festivals at UNC.
