Prof. Tacia Kohl honored with a Chapman Family Teaching Award

January 10, 2023

Congratulations to Prof. Anastacia Kohl, recipient of a 2023 Chapman Family Teaching Award from UNC! The award committee cites Dr. Kohl for her ability to create “a true community of learning within her class” and for her “significant impact on TAs” who discover “a newfound love for teaching” thorough her guidance.

An expert in foreign language education, Dr. Kohl has taught Spanish language in Romance Studies for 17 years and has served as Director of the Spanish Language Program since 2020. In addition, she has been teaching ROML 700, the required course for all new graduate teaching fellows in the department. In that course, she shares her extensive knowledge of the research of teaching and learning foreign languages, orienting graduate students in that field of research, while also providing practical mentorship and a supportive environment for novice teachers.

One of the most prestigious University Teaching Awards, the Chapman Teaching Awards were created in 1993 with a gift during the Bicentennial Campaign from Max Carrol Chapman, Jr. ’66 on behalf of the Chapman family. The awards were established to honor the distinguished teaching of undergraduate students.
